On October 7, approximately 5,000 migrants were living in the Gaza border communities: labor migrants working in the construction, agriculture, and domestic care sectors; participants in the agricultural internship program; and asylum seekers. Among those murdered that day were 71 migrants from Thailand, Nepal, China, the Philippines, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Moldova, Eritrea, and Sudan. During the subsequent war, six migrant workers from Thailand and India were killed in the north of the country. All the migrants came to Israel either with the hope of providing for themselves and their families or to study, and to give themselves a better future. Instead, their lives ended brutally, far away from their homes and families.

The remains of Bipin Joshi, a student from Nepal who was kidnapped on October 7, were returned to Israel on October 14, 2025.

The remains of Thai national Sonthaya Oakkharasri, the father of a 7-year-old daughter who was working in the greenhouses of Kibbutz Be’eri, were returned to Israel on October 18, 2025.

At the time of writing, the bodies of two migrants remain in the hands of Hamas – Joshua Mollel, an agricultural student from Tanzania, and Sudthisak Rinthalak, a migrant worker from Thailand.

All the migrants left behind families, loved ones, and a whole life that will never again be complete.
